Hello Mojo,
I have shot some hyper stereos with some good luck.
But I have to agree with George, you can shoot
pictures with a regular stereo camera that are much
more than just a frozen moment in time.
You can create your own situations and lighting (this
is what I do), or even do high speed stereo of water
or smoke or other things (F.J. Flocks is a master of
that sort of cool stuff). But hyper is a lot of fun
the main things to worry about if you do it with just
one camera are:
Allignment (make sure that the camera is parrallel,
with no rotation on any axis between shots).
Amount of stereo (it is easy if you are shooting from
a low vantage point to have to much stereo in the
picture to mount it properly. This can cause eye
strain and headaches)
Movement (If you are using one camera, and then moving
it over, it is best to avoid shots of moving subjects
such as water, people, moving cars, trees on a windy
day. Not to say that it will totally ruin the shot if
you have moving stuff, but it can take away from the
feel of the image.)
And of course make sure that the focus, shutter speed,
and aperature are the same for both shots. All of
this info may seem obvious, but if you use a camera
with auto functions, it may deside on different
settings for each shot, so use the manual override.
I personally like macro stereo shots more than hyper
ones, and if you have the equipment, I highly recomend
giving macros a shot (or I should say 2 shots, so it
will be in stereo).
