Yes it would. In our case, laser beams scanned points in a vat of plastic
liquid compound, hardening the material. The parts were built up
millimeter by millimeter. Add the capability of CNC, and many things can
be done economically.
One process I have used in the past is something called Chemical Milling.
This process allows exceedingly intricate designs to be fabricated from
metal, and no design is too complicated for this method. Basically, a
sheet of metal is coated with a photo rest and exposed to UV using a mask
made using litho film. The resit is developed leaving the outline of the
part unprotected. Acid then removes metal thus separating the part. The
masks on your CRT is made this way. Cheaper than making a die.
I see a bright future for much of this technology which ironically has
been with us for decades.
