Junk is the eye of the beholder.  

Another question:  If collections sit in museums'
basements without being exhibited and without the
public having knowledge or access to them, how is
this different than being held by individuals?  A lot
of individuals put much more effort in preserving
and organizing collections, than museums do.

Another idea:  Donate to organizations, not museums.
For example:  PSA, NSA, or your local stereo club.
A collection of stereo slides can be well-utilized in
a stereo club where they might be actually exhibited
(i.e. shown in club meetings) from time to time or
loaned to members.
