Rotate your image 90 degrees before you interlace 
it. Regarding 4 image interlace I don't know if
this would work but you might want to first try
interlacing two images and then the next two images,
AND then interlace the interlaced images (phew).

There are other interlacing programs available,
other than the VREX one. I will try digging these
out if no one else doesn't by then.
