[photo-3d] Externally twinnable SLRs

All this talk about twinning Ricoh and Pentax cameras has gotten me
wishing. I've been using a twin point-and-shoot rig for a few years now
with great success. I'm about ready to move up to a twin SLR rig, but I'd
like to find something that's lightweight, has auto-exposure and auto-focus
(let's not debate the merits of these features again), and is reasonably
rugged.

So what are the best available models to use for this? I believe the Ricoh
and Pentax cameras under discussion to NOT have auto-focus, right? I've
heard people praise the Canon Rebel X for this purpose. I know these are
very lightweight, and they're fully automatic, but I've heard conflicting
reports about the quality of the lenses. Also, I'd have to figure out how
to shoot flash shots with these.

Are there other really automatic cameras for under $500 each that people
would recommend?

Thanks,

-pd
