I actually know less, but would like to point out one thing.  Every ordinary
photographic lens straightens (rectilinearizes) lines, more so the shorter
the focal length.  This amounts to a progressive tilt/shift above, below and
to the sides of the center of the picture.  I have found full frame slides
taken with my widest rectilinear lens (14mm) comfortable to view.  So I
suspect that our brains can easily accommodate a moderate amount of tilting
and shifting.  I hope so, anyhow, since I'd like to use tilting to extend
depth of field in medium format stereo pairs.
