[photo-3d] Big city stereo events.

Greetings during this Christmas season. My wish for each of you is
that you will find peace on earth and also lots of 3D toys and
treasures to gladden your hearts.

If Paris were as accessible as New York City is to me, I would surely
make a visit to the Paris in 3D exhibition at the Carnavalet Museum
before the end of this year. This would be top priority.

I have been editing a translation of "Impressions of Carnavalet," by
Pierre Parreaux and Olivier Cahen from the December 2000 issue of the
Bulletin of the Stereo Club Francais, as it is being translated from
the French by Gigi Sesti. Through the article and by examining the
book "Paris in 3D," the realization of the scope of the exhibition
has become clear to me.

The exhibition does treat a wide variety of stereo techniques from
the 1850s to the present. (We had hoped to have the translation
available before Christmas, however you should not wait for it to be
posted in English.) If you are able to travel to Paris, do not
overlook the opportunity to attend this remarkable exhibition during
its last week. It closes at the end of this year!

Not having seen a list posting of the announcement that was sent to
New York Stereoscopic Society members, and having mentioned New York
City, here is a notice of an event that I do plan to attend this
week, together with another stereo event that will be here in
February.

We have been reminded by Greg Dinkins, who also sends his
greetings, "Happy Holidddays!", :

"Next week, the Film Forum continues its series of dual-reel 3D
movies with
the presentation of "Miss Sadie Thompson". This film is a
stereographic
gem. The intelligent 3D cinematography by Charles Laughton Jr.
carries the
audience away to the exotic polynesian setting of the melodrama.
Steamy
Rita Hayworth, hunky Aldo Ray, and smarmy Jose Ferrer bring to life
this
adaptation of Somerset Maughm's "Rain". There's even an appearance by
the
busiest 3D supporting actor of the 1953, Charles Buchinsky, (later
Bronson).

To balance the subtle stereo-cinematography presented in the feature,
Director of Repertory Programming Bruce Goldstein has added the Three
Stooges short "Pardon My Backfire" to the show. If Larry can throw it
at
Shemp, then Moe can throw it at the camera. There are plenty of good
belly-laughs as tire irons, blow torches and spray paint come through
the
screen. This comedy is also a dual-reel presentation of a new print.

At a recent press screening, representatives from Sony/Columbia
Screen Gems
(owner of the films) Cineaste (the lab responsible for restoration
and new
prints) and the Film Forum all spoke of their continued commitment to
restore the repertoire of classic 3D movies. Mr. Goldstein extends a
special welcome to members of the New York Stereoscopic Society. This
year's screenings of new dual-strip prints is dedicated to the late
David
Hutchison, Film Forum's 3D consultant.

"Miss Sadie Thompson" and "Pardon My Backfire" will be shown at the
Film
Forum, 209 West Houston Street in Manhattan, December 22-28. The
complete
program screens daily at 1:30, 4:15, 7 and 9:30. It is advised to buy
tickets in advance, due to the confluence of so many attractions: 3D,
Rita
Hayworth, classic melodrama, and the madcap moptops. Box office
contacts:
212-727-8110 or www.filmforum.com

And mark your calendars now for the next meeting of the New York
Stereoscopic Society on February 9, 2001. The inimitable Sheldon
Aronowitz
will present a slide show featuring New York street celebrations and
parades. Wigstock, the Yankees championships, New Year's Eve in Times
Square, and Coney Island are on the agenda for 3D revelry. Sheldon
will
also share some gems from his world-famous collection, anecdotes of
his
adventures in collecting and his experience in making commercial
Viewmaster
packs."

Now, that is my message of stereo cheer for all those who may be able
to get to either of these "big cities."

Not to overlook the vast majority of stereo enthusiasts on this list,
may you (or someone near you) organize an exhibition of stereo works
that you can attend during the coming year.

Remember the NSA Convention at Buffalo, NY in July!

Yes, Sidney, Australia also looks good, but here I join many who will
be following from afar.
