Generally, stereophotography should rely on maximum depth of field
rather than focussing on any one subject.  Usually the best way to
focus a stereo camera is by setting the focus dial so that the near
and far points fall within the DOF markings for your selected f-stop
(or better yet, 1-2 stops wider open than your selected f-stop).

I think one of the many useful tips in DrT's book is to use the
rangefinder to focus on the subject if the scene is fairly close
and limited depth range, but to otherwise use a setting designed
to maximize DOF. (Apologies to the good Dr. for my butcher job on
the paraphrasing).

So unless you mainly shoot closeups, the rangefinder is of limited
value.
