Greetings Olivier:
In your -----Original Message-----(Olivier Cahen
[mailto:o_cahen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]) posted on January 11, 2001, you wrote:
"In your actually crappy discussions on the meaning of the word
"beamsplitters", none of you even tried to refer to the document which now
is the reference, the "Glossary of Terms Used in Stereoscopy", published by
Don Wratten in the September 2000 issue of "Stereoscopy".
Is that glossary found elsewhere? I have not seen it.
Isn't "Stereoscopy" the journal of the ISU? If so, for members of the ISU,
"Stereoscopy" is readily available, but for others it is unlikely that "we"
would be well acquainted with the "Glossary of Terms Used in Stereoscopy."
Perhaps that accounts for the lack of reference to the definitions given by
Don Wratten... When my copy of "Stereoscopy" arrives, if indeed a newcomer
is given one, then I will study it.
Did Don Wratten determine the proper definitions by an examination of
common usage, or is the specific use of terminology set forth in the
glossary unique to him? Some scholars do devise their own unique terms in
order to elaborate a conceptual system for others to utilize when
communicating among themselves about their research.
You further wrote "Of course, (w)hat is crappy is the misuse of an image
splitter, such as trying to show in projection some stereo images produced
by a Pentax or similar. The
device is not crappy for people only viewing the images in a stereoscope."
Were you addressing the "wide eyes" video adapter and viewer shown at the
3dquarium site, or are you saying that splitter produced stereo pairs are
unsuited for projection in a standard stereo projector where images can be
aligned for polarizing projection and viewing? I have never tried to mount
and project Loreo images (which do seem to be images taken with a low end
image splitting device.) On the advice of friends more experienced than I,
my Loreo has only been used for print film. I was even told that some
competitions will not accept Loreo prints as entries. Perhaps image splitter
produced stereo pairs are problematic even for stereoscope viewing!!
I am trying to build my understanding and skills in the area of 3D
projection. If anyone has projected stereo views that were taken by an
image splitting system, then mounted in 41 x 101 mm format slides, I would
like to hear the pros and cons of the experience.
