I agree that a good viewer greatly enhances the enjoyment of stereo, but I
prefer my achromatic Franka viewer over my Red Button. The reason is that
the Red Button has a touch too much magnification - just enough to reveal
the grain and resolution limit of 35mm film. With the Franka I look
transparently to the scene, whereas with the Red Button the film seems to
stand between me and the scene. The 8p Red Button view is bright and
eye-filling, but simply not as realistic.
The ideal, I think, would be an eye-filling view that is also transparent.
Medium format to the rescue. Not only is the 6x6 image crystal clear, but
you can get a full vertical view in addition to a full horizontal view. I
would suggest, however, a viewer lens wider than the "normal" 80mm. A 6x6
slide can comfortably take the added magnification. I do not have a medium
format viewer yet myself, but was much impressed with what I saw through Don
Lopp's viewer at Mesa. Don, if you are listening, what was the lens focal
length of that viewer? 65mm?
