That's interesting. I have found the opposite. If I shift (and/or skew)
The background, I have a base point which I can set, up front. Then I
Know what the overall depth of my scene is going to be and I can touch
up the big holes by rubber stamping or smearing as you say.

As I shift objects progressively forward in the scene they approach the
window and maybe some of the really close ones will come through. That's
always a crowd pleaser. Crude but effective.
