My point is that this small difference makes all the difference. I feel
that as you enlarge a photograph there is a threshold beyond which it
becomes unconvincing. That is, it becomes more a representation of a
subject than an apparently faithful record of it. For example, enlarge a
good 35mm negative to 5x7 inches and the print looks crisp. It feels like
if your eyes were better you could see unlimited detail in it. But enlarge
that same negative to 8x10 inches, and the limitations of the format
appear. As another example, a picture on a billboard looks real at its
intended viewing distance. But come closer and there is a distinct distance
at which its reality seems to dissolve. Somewhere between 47mm and 44mm
such a threshold is crossed, at least for me.
