[photo-3d] 3D Vision

Several months ago some of you were kind enough to reply to my query
about experiments which could be used to determine whether or not my
daughter has stereo vision. She has had muscle adhesions in one eye since
birth and has never been able to converge the images seen by each eye
into a single image. You asked to be informed as to the results of these
experiments.

We took an inexpensive plastic viewer for Realist slides and cut the
viewer in two parts, thereby providing an independently adjustable viewer
for each eye. I then cut a cardboard drop-in mask in two and mounted a
pair of chips in them which had strong stereo characteristics. She then
pivoted the viewers until she could superpose the images. Not
surprisingly, she could not see stereo characteristics any different from
viewing the scene separately with each eye after so many years. What was
surprising was her reaction to seeing a single image with both eyes,
something she had never been able to do before. Her remark was that all
she had ever wanted to do was to see a single image with both eyes.
Whether or not there was an added stereo effect didn't matter to her.

Now our experiments are directed toward creating other optical devices to
extend this effect to binoculars, etc., in which the focus can also be
independently controlled. Her eyes are so very unsynchronized that they
cannot act together either for convergence or focus.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and concerns. She has asked me to
thank you all for what she considers to have been a very satisfying
experience.
