Hi Bill, et al.  What I do is file the top and bottom of 
the screw base halogen bulb and then they fit without
problem.  I have these bulbs for sale for $5 (clear)
or $6 (frosted), plus $1 shipping per order.  You can

The other alternative is to modify the viewer (my book
explains how this can be done) but I don't think it
is worth the trouble.

Have in mind that certain VM model D viewers (specifically
the ones that were part of the Chinese Art VM set) are
factory-modified to accept a taller bulb and these 
will work with the unmodified halogen bulb.  These
viewers also have a light blue filter for color-
correction (to remove the orange bias of the bulb)
but the halogen bulbs are bright enough that you
don't need this filter.
