Good point. If we could set our brains to scan negative film we'd then be
able to fully appreciate the negative's greater latitiude. A non duped
slide has the advantage of being first generation. You're looking at the
actual piece of film that the image was originally formed on. In that
sense, any print is a 2nd generation dupe. This difference is especially
apparent if you're comparing color transparencies from a one hour lab to
color prints from a one hour lab. Carefully printed black and white images
are sharp enough to create the "illusion of infinite detail", which I think
is the fundamental issue. Jim Harp
