"Better" can be tough to pin down. There is a lot of folklore (like
NiCad memory) involved with batteries. The R/C modelers tend to have
good information on batteries and their uses.
NiMH have better discharge characteristics (e.g., handle the high
power draw of digicams) than alkalines, and possibly NiCads. NiCads
have a bad reputation for "memory" effects (which seems to be really a
charging issue) that NiMH doesn't have.
I haven't used NiMH batteries enough to see if they are really all
that better than NiCad.
