    It would seem to me that it really doesn't matter when you bid.  The only important thing is what is your motivation for bidding.  
    On one far extreme, you are hoping to get something very cheaply, to resell it if you happen to get it.  You will put in a low bid, and if someone outbids you, well, that's life.  
    On the other far extreme, you've been collecting a particular series for half your lifetime, and the very last one that you need to complete the set shows up.  Probably you'll get it at almost any price...
    In between is where each of us has to search our soul to determine what we think is a fair price - which is what makes life interesting, don't you think ?
    So, to me, at least, I'll decide what I'll pay, and bid then as soon as it comes out, because the idea of waiting to the last minute means that I didn't bid (enough) at first, and should be including the value of my time in the sniping bid..
