The 1640SU Photo goes for $349.00 to $399.00 and is quite a

My 1640 does great on color negatives. What version Twain 
Driver are you using? Check to make sure you have the latest 
and greatest from Epson (I believe it is 5.01b). You should 
have control over all the scanning input from gamma to 
exposure to color balance, etc. Perhaps one of these setting 
got messed up.
