Hmmm. I think a lot of bidders will bid a maximum price equal to what they
would *like to pay* for the item (i.e., still somewhat of a "bargain price"
in their mind). But if faced with a higher competitive bid, they will often
reevaluate what they are willing to pay and how much they want the item.
Now that they have spent some days imagining themselves owning this item,
they are inclined to bid higher than before because the item assumes greater
value to them than before.

Enter the snipe bidder. The sniper takes advantage of this tendency in
others to win bids at lower prices. The other bidders never see a higher
bid (at least not in time to react properly) so they generally do not act on
their feeling of greater value toward the item. They feel secure.....they
are on top of the bid, after all, perhaps have been on top for several days.
So they do nothing......and end up losing the bid in the last 30 seconds.
They reflect *after the fact* that they *would* have been willing to pay
more than the final winning bid....but now it is too late. Meanwhile the
sniper mirthfully doffs his black hat and cape and logs onto Paypal to
redeem his deviously gained prize. I can almost hear his maniacal laughter
echoing in the distance....

Yep, I gotta look into getting one of these sniping programs. Like someone
once said, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!"

Cordially,

Mike Galazin
