Well, I couldn't answer your question, so I called Dennis. His reply was to
the effect that he didn't do anything special! He used a Canon SLR with a
50mm macro lens, placed on the ground and angled upwards. The he just moved
the camera between shots "by an amount that seemed appropriate"
So there you have it - experience and gut feeling wins again!
