It would be much better to base it on percentage of screen width than
absolute pixel size.  For a single image file that contains the LRL
parts a width of 150% of the screen width would work OK.

The thing to remember (and that far to many web "designers" actively
fight) is that the world wide web is a reader's medium.  The size
shape and layout of the web page is controlled by the user preferences
for the browser, not by the HTML contained in the web page itself.  By
using percentages instead of absolute pixel sizes you don't have to
worry about the readers' screen size or browser settings.  They will
see the L and R part as the full width of their browser and if they
scroll right they will see the R and L part as the full width of their
browser.
