Was that a RED herring? Where is Senator Joe when you need him!:=)

Since I've not even been lurking very well, I may not have this message
thread nailed down.

If it refers to the practice of mounting for projection so that infinity
points will be placed on the screen at a distance representing nominal
interocular, you can do it and you should!

Overconvergence on this scale is not much of a problem in IMAX
productions(or real life) and the typical stereo theater seat is double or
more the "ortho" distance, so it should be even less of a problem.

"Coming through the window" effects like this are pretty much unique to
stereophotography and part of the fun...

Of course, one should avoid breaking the window frame, at least at the
sides and preferably top and bottom, too.
If needed, one can use double depth mounting.

As to double edges, I think that by definition, the window doesn't have
double edges in stereo. If poorly executed, it may recede into the scene at
the edges or if the room isn't dark enough, it may recede into or float off
the screen.
"Breaking the window" is usually uncomfortable to all. The other is only
uncomfortable to some.

I think, in the final analysis, mounting and projecting to infinity is
striving more for the "ortho" experience; mounting to the window is easier
and often gives more esthetic/artistic latitude. Mounting to the window is
kinda defined by the Realist system of Closeup, Medium and distant slide
mounts.

Both styles of mounting require attention to the depth range of the scene and
the slide frame(window)edges.

In the Herring picture, if you "push" the fish and the Doc back, you have to
give Cleveland up to divergent viewing and hope folk don't look at it too
long...

A picture or Dr T holding out a plate of his favorite food (pickled
herring with horseradish on the side!) , so the plate was about 4 feet
from the camera filming the event, a Stereo Realist with its approx 69mm
stereobase/35mm lenses. He is standing in a room that is 60 feet long,
with a big picture window at the rear, and through the window....is
downtown Cleveland. >>
