Thanks, George. I have tried making this point with the moderator,
but he's been unresponsive so far to my entreaties. All I get
from him are links to Web sites with suggested rules of e-mail list
etiquette.

Yesterday, I posted a reply in which I had deleted about 75% of the
original message, and left in only the relevant paragraph to which I
was reponding. Even this, apparently, was too much quotation for the
moderator, and my message was blocked.

I believe in general this list was functioning VERY well a few weeks
ago, and has only gotten worse with the current "strict" moderation.

Huh? I thought the quoting that was going on was excessive!

P.S. Your new list might be a good area for threads that
wander off 3-D!

I too am not happy with the current moderating of this list. Over the
past seven years since I've been a member, we've had several list
discussions about quoting previous messages (including entire digests),
line wrapping, people who pay a toll charge to connect to their ISP, and
discussions about the sheer volume of mail the 800 or so of generate on
a daily basis. I was surprised the other day when one of my emails was
returned because it had "...too much quoted text". The moderator and I
had a private email discussion where I politely disagreed with his
assessment of my message quoting (I did cut back the quote of the
original) in relation to my reply (about the same length of the quoted
section). However, I did agree to further limit my quoting of previous
messages within a thread (See Dr T's previous comments) I was posting
to.

However, with the transfer of the list to egroups/yahoogroups, every
subscriber to this list has the flexibility to modify their subscription
to suit their needs. This includes changing to digest mode to reduce
the number of emails received, changing to "web view only" to read the
messages posted and even unsubscribe if the traffic becomes too much. I
understand that a "newbie" to this list could feel that the volume of
this list is overwhelming but there are options to slow or halt the
stream of email and still review the messages.

I won't stop reading this list because I get a lot of useful information
from everyone who posts. I'm of the opinion that quoting previous
messages, either in whole or in part, helps with the flow of
understanding the ongoing discussion of the topic. I promised the
moderator(s) that I would be a "good citizen" and limit my quoting, so I
will. Still, checking each message prior to distribution seems, to me,
to be attempting to control something perceived to be a problem to a
minority of list subscribers.

Just My Humble Opinion,
Ron

How about conducting a poll to see whether members would prefer this
degree of moderation or not? It's possible that a few outspoken people
have created the perception that there's a problem with the list when,
in fact, there is not.

I am very concerned about the censorship of ideas. Not necessarily
intentional censorship, but inadvertent censorship as well. By this, I am
referring to the common practice of deleting parts of other contributors'
comments.

If a moderator eliminates part or all of a message, that is one thing. But,
if we each feel "compelled" to do so, by some sort of protocol, this is
potentially equally dangerous.

I used to let all of the previous message(s) go through unaltered, and I
felt very comfortable with that. Now, I have been informed that in order
to have my messages posted at all, I must delete "quotes".

When I do, I have the uneasy feeling that I may be inadvertently changing
the intent of the writer. I know that some comments of mine have been
deleted by others, leaving the remaining words seem misleading or confusing
as taken out of context.

As far as the concern about this being posted, I am sure that it will be. I
am convinced that the moderator is applying "best efforts", and would like
for the concerns that each of us feel to be satisfactorily resolved. The
more commentary on this, the better, since it gives the moderator some
guidelines as to how we each would like to see this go.

Can we create a black and white rule that says,
"If your subject line is 'Digest ###' then you
are suspended from the list for 30 days"?<grin>

Good, bad or inconsiderate, there is some
good info on this list. While I don't use my
camera very much, I sure have picked up
some good ideas listening to the experts
who post here. Keep the messages flowing.
I have a lot more I need to learn!!!
