This was posted in the RBTS1 list but I thought I would
comment on both lists.
Point no 1:
The police sees no laws broken and will not take action
but it is up to the courts to decide whether this person
can keep the camera or not. This might be the last
resort but please do not tell this guy that he can legally
keep the camera. It is up to the courts and not the
police to decide. He needs to feel the uncertainty
of the situation to be convinced to return the camera.
Point no. 2:
There is only a small group of people in the entire
universe that would be willing to pay what this
camera is worth. He cannot contact the local camera
shop and sell the camera for $3000. He needs to
find US. He needs to understand that because of
the moral stigma that this camera carries, he will
have hard time selling it to US.
If he thinks he can remove the RBT serial number
sticker from the camera, let him know that the
camera also has the Konica serial numbers and
second hand sales of this camera happen in the
rate of one a year. Any attempt to offer this
camera for sale will be noticed by US and will
create an outcry that will hurt his efforts for a
quick sale.
Because of the legal uncertainly and the difficulties
in reselling this camera, I think this person will be
easily convinced to return the camera for a reward
(let's call it "reward" and not "selling it back to Grant")
I wish Grant would give us more details on this situation.
Was this guy offered a reward for giving the camera
back to Grant? How much? Has there been any
negotiations? What are his intentions?
OK, now we have his name. How about his address
too so we can write him a nice & polite letter, explaining
the situation as we see it.
It might be appropriate to have a third person carrying
the negotiations, given the emotional pressure that
Grant should be feeling.
Regarding the "reward" it is customary to give 10%
reward for returning lost items. Something in the
order of $500 I think is appropriate here and we
can help Grant with this.
