As the owner of the Green Button in question, I though I'd add a
few comments. While I prefer the appearance, shape, and "feel"
of the GB, I must admit to having the same reservations George
has regarding its long-term sturdiness. The one I shared at the
Stereo Dinner had been partially refurbished by myself, though I
am still not satisfied with it. In particular, the crummy
cardboard reflector imparts a yellow cast to the view which I do
not care for. It does boast one of George's halogen bulbs, which
helps greatly.
I spent a good deal of time tonight taking one of my favorite
slides from BG to RB to a 5400°K light pad with some inexpensive
Russian (Horizon, aka Zenit) 4x (for MF) and 8x (for 35mm)
loupes. Both center and peripheral sharpness of my RB seems
*marginally* superior to that of the GB. Also, the image is
brighter with more accurate color, although I'll need to do some
work with new batteries and reflectors before making any
definitive comments.
By the way, I compared the Left-edge-of-right image to
Left-edge-of left-image spacing on some 5p and 8p RBT and Spicer
mounts with some Spicer MF mounts. Within production tolerances,
all seem to share the same spacing, which makes the design of an
all-purpose viewer feasible. IMHO, nothing beats the 4x loupes
for the realist mounts, even if the magnification is not quite so
great. I shall be doing some experimenting toward the creation
of my own multiviewer.
