David,

In my handy (well, not so handy...thats why it took so long
to respond) GE "Projection Lamp" guide the original (incandescent)
lamp for the TDC 116 is listed as the CZX/DAB lamp, described as
having the following attributes:

Watts: 500
Volts: 115-120
Shape: T-10 (Tubular, 10/8 inches in diameter [1.25"])
Base: Medium Prefocus (ANSI P28/25)
Light center length: 2 3/16 inches (55.5 mm)
Max overall length: 5 3/4 inches (146 mm)
Filament type: C13D
Avg. life: 25 hrs.
Lumens: 12,500
Colour temperture: 3200K

In the GE "Stage & Studio" guide is listed a similar Halogen lamp,
the BTM, with the following attributes:

Watts: 500
Volts: 115-120
Shape: T-6 (Tubular, 6/8" diameter)
Base: P28s
LCL: 2 3/16 inches (55.5 mm)
MOA: 4 1/2 inches (114.3 mm)
Filament type: C-13D
Avg life: 100 hrs.
Lumens: 13,000
Colour temp.: 3200K

As similar as these sound, there may be pronounced differences
in the actual performance in a projector. As Tom Hubin as
demonstrated, minor (seemingly insignificant, and often unpublished)
differences in lamp and projector construction can give radically
different amounts of light on the screen. (It has been demonstrated
that a 750w lamp can actually put LESS light on the screen than
a 500w lamp...differences in the filament grid area meant that
the condensors could not focus all of the light into the lens.)

Is the BTM an accepted substitute for the CZX? I can find nothing in
writing to recommend it.

Will it work? Probably.

Will it be "better"? Beats me. I have never tried it, and cannot
endorse it...but if you want to try it, please let us know what
happens.

Good luck,

Mike
