I'm in the process of digitising the famous "Tribute to Handel" AV sequence
from Pat Whitehouse.
There are 116 slides in this show, and they are all mounted on foil masks
between glass. The film chips are original 120 film from Pat's home-built
macro cameras. They are about 40 years old. It is simply not an option to
unmount thse, scan them and remount. Potential physical damage is only one
of the considerations...
So, I've scanned them "as is" through the glass, and I'm retouching the
digital images to remove the spots that have grown on the film, then I'm
using my film recorder to produce new slides. The quality of the "dupes" is
remarkable - as good or better than anything I've seen produced optically,
and I get a chance to fix any problems.
Once I have a complete set of files / slides, I may look into removing the
galss for cleaning. But not until I know I won't destroy what amounts to a
"national treasure" :-)
