A common practice is to place the lenses as close to each other as practical
with the lenses oriented in the same direction, not in opposite directions
as is usually shown in lens diagrams.  The eye side of the lens combo would
be the flatter side of the lens.
This is not "set in stone", but has always proven to be true in any lens
combo I have worked with for use as a stereo eyepiece.
Changing the distance between lenses can be used to adjust the final f.l. of
the combination.

Common practice is to move both lenses as a fixed pair for focus adj.
