A number of publications have rated the Kodak DC-4800 at the top of the
list for color fidelity and sharpness. If  you shop the internet carefully
you can probably find it for under $700 (possibly at $600). It also has
wide angle and telephoto lenses available. 

I've come *real* close to buying one, but haven't quite done it...
