[photo-3d] "Non-text portions"

There have been questions on and off list about the
"Non-text portions of this message have been removed"
note that often appears on list messages. Photo-3d
and its related lists do not accept e-mail attachments.
The yahoogroups list software automatically strips off
all e-mail attachments sent to our lists, and replaces
them with the note above.

The reason the "non-text portions" message appears so
often is that a lot of people are sending HTML e-mail--
a bad practice. Unfortunately, HTML mail is now the
default for too many mail programs, so you need to
actively take steps to turn it off.

If you send e-mail in HTML format it usually means you
are sending two complete copies of your message, a plain-
text version and a (much bulkier) HTML portion, which is
sent as an "attachment" to the regular part of your e-mail.*

At a minimum, all subscribers should turn off HTML mail
features for messages sent to the list. It's a bad
practice, furthermore, to regularly send HTML e-mail to
anyone. HTML mail is how e-mail viruses are transmistted.
The list is protected because it automatically strips off
the HTML attachment. Your direct correspondents are not
so lucky, and may be exposed to viral infection every time
you send them an e-mail, especially if they don't know how
to turn off script processing (a more advanced topic we
won't go into here). So an even better idea is to just
turn off HTML mail format completely. (You can always turn
it back on for a single direct message if it really requres
HTML.)

*Some mail software, especially from Microsoft, likes
to send only the HTML, which results in a blank e-mail
message being seen by the list, (or by direct recipients
who cannot receive HTML mail).

The yahoogroups files area (or your personal web site)
should be used for images and other non-text information
that you need to share with the group.

If you have any questions about this, and can't find a
computer-savy friend to help you out, please write to
photo-3d-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, not to the list.
