Don't forget the addition of sound. Although towards the end it
was possible to get sound 8mm home movies, the technology wasn't
that great (IMHO). For parents who want to tape baby's first words,
the addition of sound is a MAJOR thing...plus for me of course was
the expense. You could burn up the equivalent cost of a camcorder
pretty quickly if you were really into home movies (I "produced" one
when I was about 14 - and it ran several hundred dollars then - which
was a considerable (pre-inflation) amount). 

Also of course the advent of video changed (some don't think for the
better) the way people shoot. With film being in 50' or 100' rolls 
shots tended to be very quick - with video you can run the camera as long
as you like without it costing significantly for the media.
