It all depends on the scene you are photographing (i.e. near 
and far points, magnification, etc.) and the equipment you are 
using (i.e. lens focal length).

The RBT Macro has a selectable stereobase of either 6mm or 
11mm and has magnification of 1:3 to 1:1 using a 105mm lens on 
a bellows.

There are many intense formulas out there for calculating 
these things, but not too many people use them. Most just 
estimate or use a dedicated macro stereo camera that makes the 
decision for you.
