What is a "conservative" estimate of when this would happen?
Ten years? Fewer?
Somehow, I can't imagine this happening for a long, long time.
I don't think Japanese manufacturers will abandon millions of
people owning expensive film cameras and sophisticated
lenses, especially their (possibly fanatical) domestic customer
base. At the very least, I would expect excellent slide film to be
available as a niche product for the forseeable future. (Beta
format blank video tape is still sold in Japan almost everywhere
there's a selection of VHS types, and S-VHS, Hi8, mini-DV are
all rather commonly available as well.)
Of course a "digital drop-in 35mm film replacement" device
might hit the market, allowing 100 50MB images to be
captured with greater exposure latitude and fidelity than film
offers. So film camera equipment could linger on while film
dies a natural death, however difficult the hacks required to
keep using "traditional" film stereo cameras.
All the more reason, I say, to enjoy shooting stereo with lovely
films right now, while one can, rather than abandoning the
medium. Even if bits of colored plastic turn out to be a dead-
end, they do delight.
I just ordered a 20 pack of KM-25 from a local shop, delivery in
a couple of days. Should last me a couple of years or so
(mainly using ASA 100 emulsions). K-14 processing should be
available for a little while longer. :>)
