Harry,

Yes it is nice! I like you am recently self employed after retiring from a 30 year law enforcement career. I too must worry about food on the table, roof over my head, taxes, etc... and I too must travel, pay rent for a room and eat .... and I might add ALL at my expense with nothing to sell to recoup the losses. However, from my narrow perspective, one of the reasons I attend conferences is to see "what's new" and maybe find the item that I have been looking to buy. Yes vendors are part of the conference, as they are to all conferences..or at least should be. I come to the NSA conference with expectations, to meet friends, exchange ideas, enjoy the slide shows and attend the trade show. I have planned for this conference for sometime now, I haven't had a vacation in about 10 years.

As I said earlier I too am self employed. Once I leave early on Sunday to attend another conference, this one is in Milwaukee. I will be selling computer composite programs at a 6' table that costs $800, this does not include electricity, carpet, a chair or other "accessories". The conference is 6 days in length and vendors must register for the conference at $250 and of course this does not include room rates at $100 a day. All out of my pocket in hopes of making sales. However, whether I make a sale that day or in the future it is expected of me to be there. The attendees of the conference have come to expect the vendors to be there for support and a chance to meet the people they will deal with by phone or mail.

I know you have been a supporter of NSA for years and you have earned the rest from the rigors of a conference. I am just frustrated. Frustrated that here I plan to attend a conference with certain trade show expectations and a large majority of the "known" vendors will not be there. Frustration.

I do promise to go to all of the shows, once I am caught up
paying the bills, and then, like youself, I hope to
appreciate the shows, the talk, and the friendships--and not

worry about any expenses!  You have my envy--but hopefully
some day soon I'll be sitting right next to you, in the
  auditorium-with my 3D glasses on!

I'll save you a seat in case you change your mind.  :-)

Hayden--it's really nice that you can take off of work for
the week, stay at the hotel, and enjoy yourself,
...unfortunately, I am sell-employed and no one pays my
way--so I have to do what earns me a living, and can't take
the week off to relax, drive (or fly) about 25 hours round
trip...I have not taken a vacation for about 8 years, and
struggle to find items for collectors, like yourself, that I

can convert into mortgage and food money.

(Actually, since 1978 I have given hundreds--possibly
thousands--of dollars to the NSA and other organizations in
advertising, rents, and dues--plus over the years I have
recommended to dozens of friends and customers, that they
should join and support the NSA, as well. My small token of
support to these organizations!)

Thanks and hope all enjoy--and have a great time!  Harry
