Well Grant, unless you know something I dont....time does = money. That
seems to be the paradigm of our lives more than ever in this rush , rush,
gotta have it yesterday world.

Amen soul brother! I spoke to a wonderful person last night on the phone
about RBT cameras, and told her to pursue a Realist 2.8 (so she could use
it with her Steinheils without the vignetting problem, otherwise a 3.5 is
just fine), and then contemplate an RBT. Even if she orderd an RBT today,
its about a solid year or more average wait now.
A year is a lot of time to learn more about 3D (if one can find the time!)
I also told her that despite my access to RBT cameras (sometimes I dont
have as much access as many would imagine, due to the horrible shortage of
supply) , I still use my Realist and my Wollensak cameras, and started to
work with a Belplasca last summer.
Lllllove them all!
There are times when I amn better off shooting with a Realist than my
RBT's. Example:
I think fire hydrants are cool...I have been shooting neat old ones for
years...there is no end to the variety of them. So....
1) A hydrant is a static subject
2) Its shape and height warrant a square framing/cropping
(most of the time)
3) Due to #2, often I will go to an RBT 4 close up mount to bring the
object through the window (I know, many of you just think that is such a
wrong thing to do!)
So....why bother using an RBT full frame camera? Answer....in most cases I
would not.....and I would definitely NOT use the 75mm base cameras. I
might use the S1 59mm or 45mm to cozy up a bit more to the object...but its
full frame....so it might be a waste of film, unless I want the less severe
depth ratios so that translation to projection is more forgiving and
possible.
RBT cameras do have a by product of ownership, the tendency to burn through
more film (are they the SUV's of 3D cameras....depends I suppose, and boy
do Fuji and Kodak and Agfa...etc lova ya!). Back in the early 1990's, I
felt the the need for making the mounting process faster and more precise.
The SAM concept is nothing new, but there was nothing commercially
available. After a few years of poking around, I found Jacob Van Ekeren
had an idea for a mounter liek this already in the can...but I felt it
needed some refinement...and it has gone through some small changes to get
where it is today.
Well, the point being is, that sometimes one has to spend a little money to
save a little money. Remember, RBTS mounts a reuseable again and again.
The SAM system speeds up the mounting process.
Recently I mounted up over 120 images tha Paul Wing copied from a 1905 set
of stereocards of India, for Ed Shaw. These images were STEREOCARDS copied
on a stand by Paul...and not images froma Realist. Even though Paul is
very experienced at dealing with the problems of translating old cards to
slides, there are always other obstacles. Every image had to be
"floated" and tabbed down (Wess tabs) to align the horizontal, vertical and
rotational parameters. The goal was to get them as projectable as
possible (some were not projectable my merit of the original image being
too deep to start).
I did it all (under pressure!) and in about 4.5 hours. The SAM and RBT
mounts are not for everyone, but I cant imagine how much longer all this
would have taken me without the stereo-active assistance of the SAM, for my
eyes and brain.
