George, tell me where my reasoning is wrong because
I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but I'm
having some problem doing so:

-You see a situation like this and make it known that
you have placed an outrageous $1000 max bid
(whether in fact or in fiction makes little difference).

-Those others of us who might have been disposed to
bid on the item now think "what's the point" and don't
bother.

-You then obtain the item for a favourable price because
much/most of the likely competition has been eliminated
and therefore doesn't bid the price up.
