A nice example of a classic stereo camera from the David White Company. Has
the well-regarded (even coveted, to some) Ilex lenses which are clean and
clear. Camera was CLA'd (Cleaned Lubed and Adjusted) by Jess Powell (stereo
camera repair specialist in California) two years ago. Shutter speeds are
as accurate as you can expect from a manual shutter of this vintage - no
better than +/- one third EV, and the film advance mechanism is fine:
spacing of pairs is good with minimal overlap. It should be pointed out
that the rangefinder of this particular camera continues to be somewhat
difficult to use. It seems to me that the person who assembled the camera
at the factory wasn't paying very close attention when he/she installed the
tiny mirrors that make up the rangefinder. The result is that it's hard to
see/use the bottom half of the split image. For many of you, this may not
be an issue at all because distance focusing and/or hyper-focal distance
focusing is really a lot more common. Chrome has a few discrete bright
marks, but no dings. Leather is excellent, with no scratches or tears.
There is the tiniest nick in the lower right corner of the back panel at
the very edge, but that's all I see. Black enamel paint is shows minor
wear, and there is brassing on the aperture rings that has resulted from
use of the Realist Sun Shade Filter Holder. There is a minor chip in the
bake-a-lite shade - on the underside on one of the lens surround flanges.
Lastly, the hot shoe contact (tiny, hemispheric, spring-loaded brass) has
been filed down just a bit to allow the use a modern flash (BTW, flash sync
works as it should). Over all, I think "Very Good" would be a fair (even
conservative) way to grade the cosmetics of the camera. Comes with its
original, lined leather case, also in very good condition, although there
is a seam that has started to work its way loose. However, the case still
works as it should and protects the camera just fine. I'll also include a
Realist flash in its original box and a Realist-vintage leather strap. I
paid $225 for this camera, excluding case and the CLA, from a reputable
list member not too long ago and, at the time, I considered myself lucky to
get an Ilex Realist at all. The market for the Ilex Realists seems to have
dwindled since then, however, so I'm offering this outfit for $149 plus
actual shipping and $1 packing materials fee.
