AUTHOR RON BLUM OF AUSTRALIA has selected 72 of the best of his
extensive collection of stereo cards to produce this superb 112-page
hardbound book about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904, a war that has
become almost forgotten with the passage of almost a century now. The
Russians had leased the Liaotung Peninsula from China in 1898 and began
moving large numbers of troops in to Port Arthur (now Lushun) at the
southern tip of the peninsula. Japan responded by adding 13 divisions to
its military forces and attacked Port Arthur in February 1904. After 11
months of (often fierce) naval and land battles, the Japanese defeated
the Russians.

Their victory was to a large degree pyrrhic - they had suffered
tremendous losses on the battlefields and had severely depleted their
resources, but the peace settlement (which was negotiated in Portsmouth,
New Hampshire with U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt acting as mediator)
resulted in very mild (indeed, most generous) terms for the Russians and
the Japanese did not receive the large indemnity they expected. The
book's text is interesting and very well written, and the stereo pairs
are presented in a format that gives the book a great appeal to both 3-D
enthusiasts and non-3-D readers.

The stereo pairs are superbly reproduced at about 75% of original size
and are shown in the lower third of each image page. The upper
two-thirds of each image page contains a 1.8X enlargement of one side of
the same stereo pair to provide a larger 2-D view of the scene. Maps
inside the front cover show the general area around the Liaotung
Peninsula as well as details around the immediate vicinity of Port
Arthur. Each copy of The Siege at Port Arthur includes an AOtec 3D card
viewer in a pocket inside the book's back cover.
