This is not an unusual bidding pattern. There was a bid of $238 in place
when each of the two multiple bidders were in there "chipping away" at
that maximum bid, one increment at a time, on the second day of the
auction. One of them put in a few more bids on the third day, again
chipping away at an existing bid. The winning bidder put in a $310 bid
on the 4th day, then after other bidding he/she finally went in the last
23 seconds with the winning bid (some undisclosed amount over the
selling price of $810.) The second highest bidder only bid once, near
the end. Perhaps the ultimate outcome would have been the same and the
final two bidders would have bid that high anyway, but more likely all
the bidding frenzy (height and/or number of bids) convinced them to go
higher with their last minute bids than they would otherwise have done.
Do people actually pay attention to "hot items"? I suppose some might
have seen the auction who would not otherwise have noticed it. I
generally prefer "cold" listings myself. I am not in it for the
competition. This one looked interesting but I didn't bother to bid.

Multiple bids would only be against the rules if the seller (or their
representative) were doing the bidding. I believe eBay used to allow the
seller to bid once, sort of like setting a reserve, but I am pretty sure
they changed that rule so that seller bids are no longer allowed. I
guess setting a low opening bid for an item that you are pretty sure
will be in demand is a good strategy toward achieving "hotness". -Linda
