I think Steve's approach is actually very interesting.  In the
past I've often said that any limitation relating accommodation 
and convergence is probably bullfeathers because I don't have 
any accomodation (to speak of) left and I see depth just fine.  
In addition, I see better in stereo slides than in real life 
because more is in focus.  But you know, I have an analogous limit, 
I think.  For me, if something closer than 2 meters is not out 
of focus when I'm using the distance portion of my lenses, then 
something is wrong.  (You might take pity on my poor optometrist.  
He has to measure my prescription very carefully and then specify 
the tolerance on my prescription extra tight.)  So I'm now thinking 
that as we grow older we learn a new set of rules for accommodation 
and convergence.  It's a different set of rules but we may adhere 
to them just as strongly.
