Optical Alignment

Any ideas for a simple alignment test for lenses? I've been lining my
experiments by sight, a technique that certainly has its flaws. I suspect on
my new camera I'm not bang on, but have no way to prove it.

In a related topic, how do you tell the difference between loss of edge
sharpness due to misalignment, and loss of edge sharpness due to lens quality?
