I see the problem now.  I don't mean to be cute but if you can't
tell there's a problem, is there still a problem?  In other words, 
if the lens can't be aligned for the reasons you have stated, will
your alignment of it realize any gains?

As to other possible alignment methods, I haven't been able to 
think of any yet.  8-(
