Sorry for missreading this earlier John.
I agree that DOF is the worst problem at 12"
(or other close) distance(s).
You pretty much have to go for selected focus
shots rather than "everything in focus" shots
at these distances. (Or pretty flat subjects)
My stamen shots have only the yellow stamens
in focus. The "stems" that hold the stamens
(I forget the name) and the flower in the background
are totally out of focus. Still a nice shot IMO.
