That may have been me. I had a rig that fit in front of the taking lens on
my 4x5 for that purpose, sort of. 
Mostly, I would flash an exposure to pump up the "toe" for a particular
color. If, for instance, I wanted a scene to look warm, I would flash a warm
color, thus warming up the shadows.
I'd flash between 5 & 10% of the overall exposure for what I considered a
reasonably subtle effect.

The ping pong ball sounds like a great idea... maybe with a filter slot?
