Actually, you would want the flash exposure to be the first exposure or
the "pre-exposure." I suggest you check out the very useful methodology
outlined by Adams in his book "The Negative" available in most libraries
and in hardcover or paperback. The long and short of it is that you need
both the right quantity and quality of light for this pre-exposure,
quantity being arrived at a fairly simple emperical method...
