I've read that there's a very good reason to preflash and
that post flashing gives a different effect.  Esoteric
arguments which I can't recall.  Sam W, can you help us
here?

PS: BIll and I go back a _very_ long way and I never miss
a chance to annoy him.  If you know him, you know this 
staid fellow is not likely to be a flasher.  (At least
I _think_ he's not likely...  Hmm...)
