I don't know a whole lot about integration of depth cues & I don't believe
there have been a great many studies...The names that come to mind are Mike
Landy, who did some stuff titrating various depth cues (surface shape
cues?) against one another, but I don't remember which ones...also Jan
Koenderink in Holland has looked at the effect of various binocular viewing
configurations, fairly recently...
One thought is that this might be an area in which there are pretty hefty
individual differences. For example, it may be that the people on this
list tend to apply a relatively high weight to stereo, but the relatively
high incidence of stereoblindness (7%?) in the general population suggests
that there isn't a whole lot of evolutionary pressure to use stereo at
all...
