John Bercovitz wrote the above. It is quite true that although some of the
prism devices are better than the basic Nicol as to the angle of rays that
they can polarise none can accept as wide an angle as polaroid sheet. The
pile of plates device would need to be supplied with "Parallel" light if
all the rays are to be at the correct polarisation or "Brewster" angle and
then focussed as normal by the condensers. P.J.Homer
