retinal resolution

I think Jim Crowell can say more about this, but i can offer the following:

Visual resolution is not based simply on the density or spacing of the
retinal cells.  There are cells which respond to particular space
frequencies, orientations of lines or bars, and other patterns, there are
cells which respond by inhibiting the output of neighboring cells, etc.  In
otherwords, retinal resolution is a complex product which has already been
subject to considerable processing and encoding before the signal even makes
it's way to the optic nerve.
