Ignoring the basic lens design and looking at the manufacturing process and
materials acquisition:

Glass with few imperfections
surfaces with low reflectivity
quality of lens coating material and application
optical alignment
assembly in a clean envirnoment
sealing of lens assembly
thorough component level testing

Because of the nature of sharpness, it is difficult to separate measures which
affect only contrast or sharpness. Generally, what's good for one is good for
the other.

So even though two lens have the same design, the materials and manufacturing
process can result in dramatic performance differences. Caveat emptor.
